Overview
The Sirimon route approaches Mount Kenya from the plains in the Nanyuki Timau area on the north-west. This route provide a very nice mountain view all the way to the top. The path splits on the moorlands, with the more frequently used route following the Mackinder Valley. There is a less traveled route that traverses through to the Likii North Valley. The camping areas on this route include the Old Moses and Shipton’s Camp.
One of the easiest route to reach Point Lenana.The route is on dry side of the mountain and affords walks through old growth forest.
ITINERARY
Day 1 Old Moses
Drive from Nairobi to Nanyuki at the slopes of Mount Kenya arriving in time for lunch. From here is a short drive, crossing the equator en-route, to the Sirimon Park Gate. Then trek up through magnificent montane forests, bamboo and giant heather zones before reaching the high altitude moorland and the to our first camp- Old Moses Campsite.
Day 2 Old Moses to Shipton's Camp
After an early breakfast trek to Shipton's camp (4200m). The hike is awesome but a good test on individual endurance on the mountain. The rigorous but exciting trek up takes you across hills and valleys through the entire stretch of the sprawling moorlands where you see several unique and interesting plants and animals including the Giant groundsels and lobelias and the mountain rock hyrax. Lunch is served on the way. Arrival time is early evening.
Day 3 Point Lenana then Mackinder's Camp
Leave at 3am up a steep stony quarry that cuts through a cliff clearing visible part towards lower Hall Tarns arriving point Lenana at 6:00am, taking about 3hrs. After the sunrise, some celebrations and photos descend down, you descend slowly down to Mackinders Camp for breakfast. Then have the rest of the day relaxing in the camp.
Day 4 Met Station Camp
After a late breakfast, leave the camp heading down to Met staion camp site. The trek is leisuly as you enjoy the triumphant feeling of conquering the summit point.
The Naromoru route is usually the shortest but most steepy route to climb Mt. Kenya. Lunch is served in transit and arrival timein the camp early evening. The weather here is a bit warmer and gives life an array of wildlife that visit the camp, occasionally. Buffaloes and colobus monkeys can be seen from the camp. Dinner and overnight here
Day 5 Met Station to Nairobi
Have early breakfast before your descend to Naro Moru park gate in 2 hours, from where you connect the vehicle for transfer for return journey to Nairobi or to your next destination.
